UK, Spain and EU Reach Historic Post-Brexit Deal on Gibraltar Border and Trade

The United Kingdom, Spain and the European Union have reached a historic agreement on Gibraltar, five years after Brexit.
The UK, Spain, and the EU have struck a historic agreement concerning Gibraltar, effectively ending one of the last unresolved issues from Brexit. Under the deal, Spanish officers will conduct Schengen-style passport checks at Gibraltar’s airport and port-mirroring the Eurostar system at London’s St Pancras- while the land border with Spain becomes open and free-flowing. Gibraltar residents may continue to cross using residence cards without full passport stamping, easing daily commutes for around 15,000 people. Meanwhile, British sovereignty and military autonomy over Gibraltar are fully preserved, ensuring no transfer of political control. The agreement also brings Gibraltar into a customs union with the EU, eliminating border inspections for goods and aligning tax and trade regulations to prevent smuggling.
Foreign Secretary David Lammy, Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares, and Gibraltar’s Chief Minister Fabian Picardo have all described the deal as a “historic milestone” that delivers legal certainty, economic stability, and a smoother daily life while maintaining all parties’ core interests.

P.S. It is curious that the BBC highlights Spain’s role more prominently in its Spanish-language article than in its English-language version.
